ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Constraints is an experimental stream of consciousness, which establishes a certain set of rules of engagement. With that set of rules in place, I try to exhaust the visual possibilities. This process creates a certain non-reactive, creative potential where I am free to move forward without the anxiety of meaning or quality.
Crafting personal narratives from autobiographical material, habitual action and belief in materials, my work explores the relationship between identity politics and life as performance. Although my materials may change depending on the project, a consistent methodology is applied.
The focal point of a particular project determines the material and form of the work. I see all of my work as being inherently performative. Using the power of the body to establish a sense of engagement and meaning.
Frances McMahon Ward earned a Master in Fine Arts in Intermedia from Arizona State University in 2000, studying under Drs. Muriel Magenta and Leslie Hill. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows. As an installation artist and videographer, she has staged exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum, ASU, and film festivals in Arizona, California and New York.
